Understanding Focus, Impulsivity & Daily Life

Living with ADHD means the brain works differently: attention, impulse control and activity levels may not align with expectations. At Shining Star Psychiatric Care, we recognise this reality and provide compassionate, evidence-based support to help you harness strengths, manage challenges and achieve fulfilment.

What Is Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)?

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition marked by persistent patterns of inattention, hyperactivity, and/or impulsivity that interfere with functioning and development. It begins in childhood and often continues into adulthood.

There are different presentations of ADHD, each with unique features. Common types include:

– Predominantly inattentive presentation
– Predominantly hyperactive-impulsive presentation
– Combined presentation

With proper treatment and support, many individuals can lead productive and fulfilling lives.

Symptoms of ADHD

Symptoms vary depending on whether the “inattentive,” “hyperactive/impulsive,” or “combined” presentation is involved.

What Causes ADHD?

ADHD does not stem from a single cause but emerges from the interaction of genetic, neurological and environmental factors.

Genetic predisposition  Studies show strong heritability of ADHD traits.

Neurological/brain development factors  Differences in brain regions that regulate attention, impulse control and executive functions.

Early environmental influences  Premature birth, low birth weight, exposure to certain toxins or prenatal issues may increase risk.

Life and context-related stressors While not a sole cause, factors such as poor sleep, chronic stress or major transitions can worsen symptoms.

Understanding the root helps us craft treatments that both manage symptoms and build lifelong skills.
